About ACT

The American College Testing (ACT) is a standardized test widely accepted by colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. This includes prestigious institutions like the Ivy League schools. It serves as a measure of a student's readiness for undergraduate studies.
English
The English section of the ACT evaluates a student's mastery of English language skills, encompassing grammar, punctuation, usage, and sentence construction.

This section comprises 75 MCQs to be finished within a 45-minute timeframe.

These questions revolve around five passages, each paired with a set of 15 questions. The passages are typically sourced from diverse materials, including fiction and non-fiction literature, essays, and speeches.
Maths
The Math section comprises 60 multiple-choice questions, with a 60-minute time limit.

Questions are arranged by difficulty level, covering a spectrum from pre-algebra to plane geometry and even touch on trigonometry. While topics vary, the test emphasizes earlier math skills more than advanced ones.

In this  section, problems typically fall into three categories: Reading and Drawing Diagrams, Story Problems focusing on linear equations and systems, and Concept Questions testing specific math knowledge.
Science
The Science section contains 40 questions based on seven passages from various scientific fields like biology, chemistry, physics, and earth/space science.

Passages are typically 500-700 words long and include graphs, charts, tables, and other scientific data. Questions test your ability to analyze and interpret scientific data, understand concepts, and apply knowledge to problem-solving. Multiple-choice with four options, one correct.

You're given 35 minutes for this section. Effective time management and thorough reading are vital for comprehension.
Reading
The Reading section includes four passages, each followed by 10 questions, totaling 40 questions.

Passages span genres like fiction, non-fiction, humanities, and social sciences, around 700-900 words and at a high school level.

Questions test comprehension skills like grasping the main idea, drawing conclusions, making inferences, identifying the author's purpose and tone, and evaluating arguments. Multiple-choice with four options, one correct.

You have 35 minutes for this section, about 8-9 minutes per passage. Effective time management and careful reading are crucial.
Writing (optional)
The Writing section features one essay prompt, addressing a complex issue for which you must take a stance, supported by evidence and examples. Graded on a scale of 1 to 12 by two graders, resulting in a total score of 2 to 12.

You're given 40 minutes to complete the essay, allowing ample time for planning, writing, and revising. Effective time management and pre-planning are key for a clear and well-organized argument.

While optional, some colleges and universities may require or recommend this section. It's essential to review the application requirements of your desired institutions to determine its necessity.
